HOW QUESTIONING CAN BE USED AS AN EFFECTIVE TEACHING STRATEGY?
It is a teacher’s job to find or formulate an effective teaching strategy for the students. One strategy that the teacher can use is questioning. Basically, a question is a sentence, phrase or word that asks for information. How would this help the students? Would not it just make things worse because you will give a question to their troubled or confused minds? How could this method be effective?
First, questioning is done to assess the achievement of the students or how well they understand a lesson. Do not ask the students, “Do you understand?” or “Is everything clear?” They would probably just say yes even though it is the other way around. Asks questions which are connected to the topic and will test if your lesson’s objectives are reached.
In addition, it could also help to develop the critical thinking skills and inquisitive attitudes of the students. The teacher should give information about the lesson but not everything. Teachers should give the students the chance to analyze and solve the questions by themselves after supplying information. This would help them practice their own critical thinking. They would learn the lesson by relying on their own ability and not only from the teacher’s explanation.
Lastly, questioning also improves the student’s preparation before coming to class. If you do questioning strategy most of the time, the student would anticipate it and would study his lessons in advance. If the student still could not understand the lesson or is confused with some ideas, the teacher should still be there to answer but it minimizes the time used in discussing the whole topic. So once the student comes to class, you could already pinpoint his or her strengths and weaknesses.
In brief, questioning is a strategy which helps develop a learner-centered classroom and a stimulating environment. It raises the interest and motivate the students to become actively involved in the discussion, making it effective whatever the level of the student is.
